Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the coexistence mechanism of social anxiety and depression. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of cognitive reappraisal (CR) and behavioral activation system (BAS) in contributing to depression. Specifically, the three-way interaction between social anxiety, BAS, and CR was tested. For this purpose, 359 participants completed the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), BiS/BAS scale, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The hypothesis was tested by using PROCESS macro for moderated moderation analysis. The results showed that the three-way interaction between social anxiety, BAS and CR was significant. Specifically, the higher the CR and the level of the BAS, the less depression was experienced by individuals with high social anxiety. On the contrary, although it was not statistically significant, the tendency to experience more depression was found in individuals with high social anxiety when CR was low and BAS was high. These results suggest that the protection and risk factors that make persons with social anxiety experience depression can change according to the condition. Based on these results, the clinical significance and limitations of this study are discussed.
